Where do you get ideas for your characters? when I'm traveling alone. mostly in the car, but sometimes when I'm walking, too

cliff-hangers are good for keeping an audience hooked; I like them at the end of chapters. But happy endings, when all the loose ends are tied off, are my favorites.
